How to Reset the Oil Life / Service Light

How to Reset the Oil Life / Service Light

What the oil life/service light means

The oil life or service light tells you a scheduled service is due. It is driven by a counter in the instrument cluster or engine computer, not by a sensor that "sees" dirty oil. That's why it stays on after an oil change until you reset it.

Cars track service in one of two ways:

  • Fixed interval – the car counts down a set distance or time (for example 10,000 miles or 12 months).
  • Flexible / condition-based – the car estimates remaining oil life from engine revs, temperature, trip length and load. GM's Oil Life Monitor, Honda's Maintenance Minder, BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) and VW Group's LongLife service all work this way.

You'll see it as "Oil Life 0%", "Service Due", "Maintenance Required", "Oil Change Due", "INSP", a wrench icon or a code like Honda's A1. Whatever the wording, the reset logic is the same: do the service, then tell the car the counter can start again.

Red oil-can light
Pull over and check the oil.

Oil life light vs. service light vs. check engine light

Only the first two are reminders you reset after maintenance. The check engine light signals a fault and needs a diagnosis first.

A red oil-can light is an emergency, not a service reminder. Pull over, switch off and check the oil level before driving further.

Method 1: Reset the service light with the Carista app (VW Group and BMW Group cars)

If you drive a VW Group or BMW Group car, the quickest way to reset the oil life or service light is the Carista app. You don't need to memorize button combinations. Carista pairs a small Bluetooth adapter with an iOS/Android app.

Carista's Service indicator reset resets your "Service Due" indicator with a single button tap. It clears both the oil change indicator and the inspection indicator, so you don't have to dig through dash menus.

How to reset the service light with Carista:

  • Locate your car's OBD2 port – usually under the dashboard, left of the steering column.
  • Plug in the Carista EVO Scanner or the Carista OBD Reader.
  • Switch the ignition on (engine off is fine) and open the Carista app.
  • Connect to the adapter and let the app identify your car.
  • Open the Service section and choose Service indicator reset.
  • Tap Reset. Turn the ignition off and on again to confirm the indicator has cleared.

Why VW and BMW owners use it on the go:

  • No menus or button tricks – one tap clears both the oil change and inspection indicators.
  • More than a reset – the same app reads and clears fault codes, so if a warning comes back you can see why.
  • Keeps records – log each oil change in Carista's Car Diary so you know when the next one is really due.

Check exactly what Carista supports for your model in the app or on the Carista vehicles page.

Method 2: Reset the oil life light manually

Most cars can also be reset without tools using one of three universal methods. Exact steps change by model year, so confirm in your owner's manual.

A. Dashboard / infotainment menu (most cars from ~2015)

  • Ignition on, engine off (or engine running on some models).
  • Use the steering-wheel arrows or the touchscreen to open Settings, Vehicle, Maintenance or Service.
  • Select Oil life / Oil change / Service interval.
  • Choose Reset and confirm. The display should show 100% or the full interval.

B. Trip / odometer button (many older cars)

  • Ignition off. Press and hold the trip reset or odometer button.
  • Turn the ignition on (don't start the engine) while still holding the button.
  • Keep holding 5–15 seconds until the display flashes, counts down or shows "reset".
  • Release, switch off, then switch on again to check.

C. Pedal sequence (older GM and Ford models)

  • Ignition on, engine off.
  • GM: press the accelerator slowly to the floor three times within about five seconds.
  • Ford: press and hold the brake and accelerator pedals together for about 20 seconds, until the cluster confirms the reset.
  • Turn the ignition off and on to confirm the light is gone.

Service light won't reset? Common fixes

If the oil life or service light won't reset, or comes back after a restart, the cause is usually simple. Most often the ignition was switched off before the reset confirmed, or only one of two counters was cleared. Less often, the light is pointing to a real fault rather than a service reminder.

Find your symptom below and try the matching fix before booking a garage visit.

FAQs

What is the easiest way to reset the service light on any car?

On most cars it's the dashboard menu: Settings > Maintenance > Oil Life > Reset. On VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Cupra, MAN, BMW and Mini models, Carista's Service indicator reset clears the oil change and inspection indicators in one tap, with no button sequences.

Can I reset my car's service light from my phone?

On VW Group and BMW Group cars, yes. Plug a Carista scanner into the OBD2 port, open the Carista app on iPhone or Android, and run Service indicator reset.

Can a basic OBD2 scanner reset the oil life light?

Not always. Generic code readers only read and clear engine fault codes. Service resets need manufacturer-specific access to the instrument cluster, which Carista provides for VW Group and BMW Group cars.

Do I need a dealer to reset the service light?

No. You can reset it yourself from the dash menu, with a button sequence, or with an OBD2 app. Doing your own reset does not affect warranty as long as the service itself is done to spec and recorded.

What's the difference between oil life reset and service reset?

Oil life reset restarts the oil-change counter. Service (inspection) reset restarts the wider maintenance interval. Many cars track both separately, so reset both after a full service.

How often should I reset the oil life indicator?

Every time you change the oil and filter – and only then. Log the date and mileage, for example in Carista's Car Diary, so your service history stays complete.
